Cash vs. Annuity Options
Lottery jackpot winners must select how they wish to receive their grand prize. This choice must typically be declared within 60 days of claiming the prize.
📅 The Annuity Option
30 Graduated Payments Over 29 Years
Under the Annuity structure, the lottery commission invests the cash pool in U.S. government securities. Winners receive one immediate payment, followed by 29 annual payments.
- Inflation Protection: Each annual payment increases by 5%.
- Maximum Payout: Yields 100% of the advertised jackpot size over the 29-year term.
- Financial Shielding: Protects winners from losing their wealth quickly to bad investments or spending habits.
💵 The Cash (Lump Sum) Option
Single Immediate Payout
The Cash option represents the actual cash value of the prize pool at the time of the draw. It is the amount required to fund the annuity.
- Immediate Capital: Moves with long-term interest rates: about 42% to 45% of the advertised jackpot with the 30-year Treasury yield above 5% (late 2026), and around 70% when rates were near 2% (2020–2021).
- Reinvestment Freedom: Allows immediate access to funds for custom investment portfolios.
- Tax Exposure: The entire amount is taxed in a single calendar year, triggering maximum tax rates immediately.
Tax Considerations
Lottery winnings are considered ordinary income by the IRS and state taxing authorities:
- Federal Withholding: The lottery commission automatically withholds 24% of winnings for federal taxes for U.S. citizens.
- Federal Marginal Rate: Major jackpots will place you in the highest marginal bracket (37%), so most winners owe more than the 24% withheld when they file (see the jackpot tax tables).
- State Taxes: Varies by state. Top rates include NY (10.9%, plus 3.876% for New York City residents), NJ (10.75%) and OR (9.9%), while CA, FL, NH, SD, TN, TX, WA, and WY charge 0% state tax on lottery prizes.
